Infrastructure

Campus consists of the Free University of Tbilisi and the Agricultural University of Georgia, founded through charity organisation Knowledge Foundation, which in turn was founded by Kakha Bendukidze. The campus buildings are 55,000 square metres.

Kakha Bendukidze Campus includes auditoriums of different sizes, amphitheatres, conference halls, scientific and educational laboratories, studios, exhibition spaces, library, examination centre, computer classes, museum, genbank for plant resources, plant collection, entomology collection, mycological herbarium, veterinary clinic, Viticulture and Winemaking Academy, Culinary Academy,. Campus has more than 50 laboratories for various fields, such as: physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, veterinary medicine, winemaking, food technology and others. There are also recreational areas, a dendrological park, internal courtyards, an open amphitheatre, sports halls and fields, and a cafeteria.

Kakha Bendukidze Campus has a 456-kilowatt solar power plant, which is currently one of the largest in the country. Electricity, generated through solar panels, replaces 15-20% of the energy consumed by the campus, increasing energy efficiency and reducing costs.

History of the place

The first part of the building complex of Kakha Bendukidze Campus (building A) has been operating since 1967. A viticulture building, known as the Ampelography Building, was built in 1970. The construction of the second row  of the buildings (B building) was completed in the late 1970s. The author of the building is the famous Georgian architect Lado Alexi-Meskhishvili (1915-1978), together with Guram Gabashvili (1919-2014).

At that time, the campus housed the Agricultural Institute of Georgia, which later became the Agricultural University of Georgia.

The campus acquired a new life in 2011, when Kakha Bendukidze, through his charity fund the Knowledge Fund, started large-scale reforms for the fundamental transformation of the Agricultural University of Georgia, which included: developing and implementing new programs that were taking into account international experience, establishing practical and laboratory courses, inviting qualified professors and researchers, some of whom returned to Georgia from abroad, basic rehabilitation of the campus infrastructure, improvement of the territory and equipping the laboratories with modern equipment.

History of the place

Museum

The museum combines collections of natural sciences: soil science, mineralogy, dendrology, entomology, sericulture, mycology, zoology and pathoanatomy.

The museum also has a stand dedicated to the work of Alexander Kartveli (Kartvelishvili), an aircraft designer and engineer of Georgian descent, who was working in the USA.

The museum has existed in its current form since 2014, although some of its exhibits and collections were created over decades ago, and most of them have been restored.

The purpose of the museum is to provide educational samples and space for university programs, as well as to promote interest in natural sciences among schoolchildren and visitors.

Museum organises group tours, especially for school pupils trips, any school that is interested can register for the tour completely free. Since 2014, the museum has hosted more than 10,000 people.

Bazaleti Training Center

Bazaleti Training Center  has been operating since 2011 and is part of the unified educational infrastructure of the Kakha Bendukidze Campus, which is located near the Bazaleti Lake. 

Bazaleti Training Center includes a conference hall for training purposes, auditoriums for training, hotel-type individual and shared bedrooms, kitchen, cafeteria, sports field and recreational outdoor spaces. The centre can host up to 100 visitors.

Trainings organised by Free and Agricultural Universities, summer and winter schools and various cognitive activities are regularly held at the Bazaleti Training Centre.
