The Knowledge Fund

The Knowledge Fund is a non-profit, official Charity Organisation founded by Kakha Bendukidze in 2007. The Knowledge Fund is exemplary in the field of education in Georgia and is the founding organisation of Free University of Tbilisi and Agricultural University of Georgia.

The goal of the fund is to provide the young generation with world-class education and to promote high-quality scientific research in Georgia. For this purpose, the fund invests in the future generations of Georgia through financing educational and research infrastructure of Free University of Tbilisi and Agricultural University of Georgia, as well as finances students’ fees & research activities.

In the period of  2007 and 2014, Kakha Bendukidze has invested approximately 50 million USD in education and science through the Knowledge Fund. Since 2018, the fund has also started its activities in secondary education. After Kakha Bendukidze's death, his Team has invested an additional 30 million USD through the Knowledge Fund, making the total investment by 2023 more than 80 million USD, which is an outstanding private charitable investment in the field of education and science in Georgia.

The Knowledge Fund is actively continuing Kakha Bendukidze’s mission and vision of the fund.

Free University of Tbilisi

Free University of Tbilisi was founded in 2008 by Kakha Bendukidze through a non-profit organisation The Knowledge Fund, and it’s currently one of the leaders in the tertiary educational sector in Georgia.

The university is distinguished by its high-quality teaching, a high rate of employed graduates and a modern learning environment. Free University of Tbilisi is the first choice for most successful applicants, who took the Unified National Examinations.

In the World Bank's 2019 report "The Changing Nature of Work", the overview of the success of universities begins with the Free University of Tbilisi and it is the only higher education institution mentioned in the report, as a globally successful organisation:

"The Free University of Tbilisi was established in 2007 through a non-profit organisation. It has already become the top-performing, most sought-after university in Georgia. [...] The university offers a high quality faculty, flexible course offerings, and discussion-based pedagogy. Each year, the university attracts hundreds of top-tier applicants, and more than 96 percent of its graduates find employment or enrol in further education."

Free University of Tbilisi

  • 2008 - ESM Business School, founded in 1992 and the Institute of Asia and Africa, founded in 1991, were integrated into the Free University of Tbilisi. 
  • 2009 - Law School was established;
  • 2010 - School of Mathematics and Computer Science (MACS) was established;
  • 2011 - School of Governance and Social Sciences was established;
  • 2011 - School of Physics was created
  • 2013 - Euro-Atlantic concentration was added to the international relations program, and Institute of Asia and Africa was renamed into School of International Relations;
  • 2014 - School of Visual Arts and Design (VADS) was founded;
  • 2014 - Master's and Doctoral School (Graduate School) was established;
  • 2018 - Architectural Program established, and VADS became the School of Visual Arts, Architecture and Design - VA[A]DS;
  • 2019 - Building System Engineering  program was established, MACS school was transformed into the School of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering - MACS[E]

  • Undergraduate Program in Building Systems Engineering (2019)
  • Master's Program in Finance (2019)

Currently, Free University of Tbilisi operates 10 bachelor's, 6 master's, 4 doctoral accredited programs and a number of certification  courses. Taking into account all programs, there are about 3,000 students who are enrolled at FUT.
