Conference in Washington D.C.

Free and Agricultural Universities in cooperation with the German Marshall Fund organized a conference Georgia's Political Transition: Preserving a Euroatlantic Future of the Region. The conference took place on November 20 at the German Marshall Fund.
Senator John McCain delivered a key-note speech at the conference. Mr. KakhaBendukidze, Chairmen of the Free and Agricultural Universities, spoke about current political and economic trends in Georgia and possible development scenarios. Speakers at the conference included representatives of the US Department of State, German Marshal Fund, Carnegie Endowment, Cato Institute, School of Advanced International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University and Ilia State University, Georgia.
According to Senator McCain, "at a time when so many countries across the world are struggling, and often failing, to lay this foundation of democratic governance, when political power is still the source of so much social unrest and even violence, Georgia is an inspiration for the world. (...)Over the past decade, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Georgian people, a reformist government has transformed an authoritarian state with a closed and stagnant economy into a democratic system with a vibrant, market-based economy. Georgia's infrastructure has improved. Its economy is being liberalized. Its democracy is deepening and becoming more transparent and accountable to Georgia's citizens."
